2/3/12
Adrian’s: Open with no restrictions. The road is marked out 12-13 miles now with fishing a little spottier as of late.
Morris Point: They have added a couple more miles to there road as well getting to 33-34’ of water with a good mix of walleye & sauger’s. The crack is holding up good.
Zippel Bay: No restrictions here, they have added a couple roads beyond the crack getting into 33’. Jackfish, Honey Hole, & Hot Spot roads are the ones to look for.
Long Point: No restrictions. Simple message here; GOOD!
Babbler’s Road: Access is open. Marked to Arnesons reef, trucks have been getting to 16 mile reef but you’ll need GPS as the fog continues into the weekend. Richard intends to mark it all the way as soon as he can see. (He hasn’t advanced to GPS yet).
Swift Ditch/Five Mile: No report.
Springsteel: It’s a daily battle with the crack right by the access but it hasn’t halted any traffic. Trucks making there way as far as south tip, but can’t get across the crack to whiskey, I haven’t been out there myself so I’m assuming that sleds are getting across cause the snowmobile trail to the angle runs through there. Fishing has been pretty good this week.
We have live chubs & suckers & frozen shiners. The live shiners are gone for the year. Many great deals on jigs/spoons 3 for $5. Electronics, Augers, Portables & more.
This week we are taking $50.00 off all remaining Otter Wild Lodges.
Thanks, be safe & good luck fishin!!
See you soon!

Adrian’s: Open with no restrictions. 32’ is where it’s at, although seems the saugers have been a little scarcer. The road now is marked out 9 miles past Pine Island.
Morris Point: They have extended the road out another mile so they’re now out about 6 miles. A little better report here with the saugers with Wednesday’s anglers bringing in complete limits from the 32’ depths. There are a few more in this area trying the 16-18’ for the evening bite & doing OK.
Zippel Bay: No restrictions here, Walleye St. has done well for some again in the evening that’s about 15-16’ some nice Walleye reported. Sauger frenzy going on out in 28-30+’. The roads are good.
Long Point: No restrictions. You don’t need to go far, just straight out front & a little east in 30’ has been treating the anglers well. Feel free to venture over to Twin Islands too sounds pretty good lately.
Babbler’s Road: Access is open. No word from Richard this week so I can’t give any accurate info on 12 & 16 Mile reefs.
Swift Ditch/Five Mile: Jon from K&A Hide Away Sleepers is managing the access at Five Mile Reef & has been allowing vehicles since last Friday. Because this area has just started, he said there’s room for more; usually it gets pretty crowded by now. Fishing has been spotty.
Springsteel: Finally open for business! They have been working pretty much every day on the breaker which is right off the access. Trucks have been traveling to south tip but haven’t been able to cross that breaker to get to Whiskey Jack Flats. The sand bar & DNR reef have been doing fair, but the “tip” has been the preferred area lately. The only marked trail is the snowmobile trail; remember you don’t want to drive anything but a sled on it.
We have live Shiners, chubs, & suckers. Many great deals on jigs/spoons 3 for $5. Electronics, Augers, Portables & more.
This week we are taking $50.00 off all remaining Otter Wild Lodges. & have Vexilar FL18’s marked down from $439.95 to $389.95!!!!
Thanks, be safe & good luck fishin!!
See you soon!

Adrian’s: Open with no restrictions. Wednesday was a good day for their clients fishing in 32’, which is about all the deeper your going to get in most of lake we cover as the lake is below its average level. At the time of this report they had no issues with cracks or breakers.
Morris Point: They have extended the road out about 5 miles to 32’ there are a few bridges to cross but everything is in good shape. Fishing was a little slow in the beginning of the week, but sounded better today.
Zippel Bay: No restrictions here, I was out Monday & Tuesday in 30’ & didn’t have the greatest success (hard to admit) but sounded fairly decent around us. All we brought in were saugers. To get deeper the breaker was too much to cross at that time but is passable now. Wouldn’t hurt to try 27-28’ for walleye in the later part of the day.
Long Point: By Saturday they anticipate that vehicles will be allowed to pass. They too are doing well fishing in 31’ of water.
Babbler’s Road: Richard is going to open his access Friday morning, he has a bridge across the crack, but has no more info from that point north. He mentioned that sleds & ATV’s have been back & forth to Gull Rock for some time now.
Swift Ditch/Five Mile: reports of vehicles venturing out to Five Mile Reef, that’s about all I have right now. Considering we are at this point of winter & with colder temps & the shallower water I would have to bet that heading deeper would be better but might be a good place for the evening bite.
Springsteel: ATV’s & sleds have been allowed since Wednesday; they are flooding & chipping away at the crack which is right where you enter the lake. There goal is to have it open to at least ½ ton trucks by Saturday. The sand bar & the DNR reef have been doing OK for the few that have made it out there.
We have live Shiners, chubs, & suckers. Many great deals on jigs/spoons 3 for $5. Electronics, Augers, Portables & more.
Thanks, be safe & good luck fishin!!

Adrian’s: Open with no restrictions. The road is marked out about 3 miles past Pine Island. Fishing has been good out deep in 30’+.
Morris Point: Going well here, they have a couple of breakers that keep them busy, but that’s pretty normal each year. Trucks are a better choice than a car because of the clearance needed on some of the bridges. ATV’s & sleds of course are making there way around just fine. Most action happening in 30-31’ & remains good, so far the little colder temps haven’t altered the bite.
Zippel Bay: warmer weather earlier in the week developed some cracks but they are bridging & rerouting some of the roads so pay attention, the route you took out may have changed some for your trip back in. 26-30’ has been the depths reported for the best results, so that gives you a wide area to venture (good thing as there are a lot of houses out there). I forgot to mention last week that they have nearly doubled the size of the igloo, so chances of getting a seat & table have nearly doubled as well!
Long Point: Opened to ATV’s! You will need to stay straight north & east of the resort. To the west towards twin islands is not ready for travel yet, if you have a question stop at the resort & ask!! Good Fishing in about 27’.
Babbler’s Road: Closed
Swift Ditch/Five Mile: no report.
Springsteel: Not Open yet. Sounds like Reel Adventures, Izzy’s & Bobs Fishing have started to pull a few houses out towards 5 mile, but I don’t have any from the horses’ mouth facts about how they got there. Anyway it looks like we’ll have to wait another week before we can recommend anything here.

Cracks can develop at anytime so pay attention. I don’t have a direct quote from Brian on the fishing as he was unavailable when the report was drafted, but some of my customers have had a real good time earlier this week. That particular day they were in 25’ with an hour & half of slow bite between 1 & 2:30. If there is a good thing about this weather it is that you can move to different depths easily with no snow & only 18-20” of ice to drill.
Morris Point: Al had to close the road to trucks because of an ice breaker that has heaved up to far to be bridged, ATV’s & sleds are still allowed. 28-30’ is where most the action is here with many happy clients. Skimpy report here because they’re too busy to talk. (Sounds like a good place to be)
Zippel Bay: They have opened the Bay & the lake to light trucks to go out no further than 28’. Fishing for Walleyes is happening in 14-20’ & Sauger action is out 20-28’. The resort has been very busy, with an overflow coming from the west where it’s not quite ready yet. The “Igloo” went out on Wednesday, so game on at Zippel!
Long Point: Opened to ATV’s! You will need to stay straight north & east of the resort. To the west towards twin islands is not ready for travel yet, if you have a question stop at the resort & ask!! Good Fishing in about 27’.
Babbler’s Road: Closed
Swift Ditch/Five Mile: Nope
Springsteel: Not Open yet. This has been a tough start for the resort, just thought I’d mention the lodge is still open with spirits & food & play off football just starting. If you’re in the area stop by.
Muskeg Bay didn’t freeze with the rest of the lake, so from around the south tip of Buffalo Bay to Twin Islands depending on which direction the wind is blowing, there has been a body of open water, which has or maybe soon ice over, so on the surface it will all look the same but underneath the thickness will not be enough to support vehicles yet. The sheriffs dept. has been warning of this. They are another resource a person could call if you have questions.
The weather forecast is still for mild temps but you need to remember there is no snow to insulate so it’ll keep making ice.
Remember there’s no fish worth compromising you or someone else’s safety.

Adrian’s: ATV’s only. 13 ¼” of ice on the lake & 12 ¾” in 4 Mile Bay, these are the thinnest measurements that Brian has taken over there. The mild weather continues & slowly but surely its making ice. They have been fishing out as deep as 28’ but there’s really no need to go that far as 18’ has been doing as well. The fishing stories continue with comments like “no need for a second line cause you can’t keep up with one”.
Morris Point: ATV’s only. 12” of ice everywhere within 2 miles of the resort. Most action is happening in 24-26’ now. Moving in to 16-17’ at evening has been successful too. The water is very clear this year so there hasn’t been any talk of any certain colors as of yet.
Zippel Bay: They have opened the Bay & the lake to light trucks. Deanna’s instructions are to not go beyond Sauger St.to the north or Bobber St. to the west. They report 14-15” of ice. the Igloo is not out yet but is on the table for a decision maybe into the weekend.
Long Point: Just opened to ATV’s! You will need to stay straight north & east of the resort. To the west towards twin islands is not ready for travel yet, if you have a question stop at the resort & ask!! Comments about the water clarity here is that you can see down about 12’. They have houses out as far as 27’. Fishing has been real good.
Babbler’s Road: Closed
Swift Ditch/Five Mile: Nope
Springsteel: Not Open yet. There has been some walking out in the bay towards Canada & around Taylor Bridge in Warroad but until the resort opens access I’m not recommending anything. The same goes for Swift, you’ll see some out there along the south shore after some Northern action, but I can’t recommend it, back to what I mentioned last week the Resort Captains are the one’s to listen to, its what they do!

Adrian’s: ATV’s only. 11 ¾” of ice & they are out as deep as 28’ although in as shallow as 18’ is working well also. Shiners have been what most are using, but that maybe because it’s what the resorts have most of.
Morris Point: ATV’s only. 12” of ice everywhere within 2 miles of the resort. Most action is happening in 24-26’ now. Moving in to 16-17’ at evening has been successful too. The water is very clear this year so there hasn’t been any talk of any certain colors as of yet.
Zippel Bay: ATV’s only. 12 ½” of ice on the lake. They are allowing trucks on the bay to the lake at which point you need to use ATV’s. 16-24’ is still where it’s all happening.
Long Point: Not open yet.

Basically Zippel Bay & east is the only recommended areas other than the Northwest Angle. From Zipplel & west the lake has never completely froze across. The wind has been changing direction daily & it hasn’t been clam enough, cold enough, for long enough to complete the sheet.
The weather forecast is still for mild temps but you need to remember there is no snow to insulate so it’ll keep making ice.

Adrian’s: Fishing still awesome in 20-24’ with 9 ½” of ice. ATV’s only still, you’ll see some small jeeps here & there but they are the resorts hauling anglers in & out, so no full size vehicles yet.
Brian mentioned that you don’t need to go to 20+’ they are still reelin em in at 14’.
Morris Point: ATV’s only. 10” of nice ice. Anglers are out about 1 mile in 20-24’ & still not having to spend a lot of time at it, quickly filling walleye & sauger limits.
Zippel Bay: ATV’s only still, they have about a foot of ice in the bay & fishing on the lake in about 16 to 21’ of water where the ice is about 9 ½ - 10”. The Igloo won’t be going out until truck thickness is achieved which is about 16-18”. Fishing limits being filled here also with no problem.
Long Point: Not open yet, the wind opened a crack last weekend & has now frozen over with about 6” but the wind is howling again from the north. Not to worry, Long Point typically doesn’t open until just before Christmas which looks the case this year again.
Babbler’s Road: Closed

Hello everyone & welcome to the Lake of the Woods weekly ice fishing report, brought to you by Denny’s Outdoor Sports in Roseau MN.
I hope everyone enjoyed the summer & the fantastic Fall.
Anyway, here’s what’s happening as of now & for the weekend:
Basically the resorts from Morris Point & east are going to allow ATV’s.
Al at Morris is pretty happy with crystal clear ice 6” thick out to 17’ – 20’ of water & fishing is phenomenal for walleye & saugers.
Zippel Bay is uncertain weather they will allow access yet, so call Deanna before you go 218-783-6235.
Adrian’s, have houses out at 12’ & 14’ of water with 6” of ice & fishing has been indescribable (as in great!). Four Mile Bay has 9” of ice where they have the trail marked for ATV’s. Sounds like the Wigwam is pulling houses out also.
Long Point & west has open water in different areas & I don’t recommend accessing anywhere there yet. Remember you need to listen & follow the resort captain’s instructions, this is what they do! Even in the dead of winter no ice is safe ice, stay away from cracks (like far away!!). bring your ice picks with & some sort of traction for your feet, with no snow its really slick out there. Muskeg Bay usually takes a little longer to freeze over especially with the wind as of late. One thing that helped the east end get going is that the Rainy River is pretty low with very little current. The weather forecast is still for mild temps but you need to remember there is no snow to insulate so it’ll keep makin ice.
Remember there’s no fish worth compromising you or someone else’s safety.
Here’s the phone #’s to the resorts, call them to answer any of your questions:
Adrian’s 218-634-1985
Wigwam 218-634-2690
Morris 218-634-2570
Zippel 218-783-6235
Long Point 218-783-3365
Babblers 218-442-6661
Springsteel 218-386-1000
Once the season gets rolling I will start my usual format with info at each of the access areas.
Good news on the bait situation; looks like we will have SHINERS!
Thanks be safe & good luck fishin!!
Denny
